Lower Bobs Skatepark: Oakland’s DIY Gem and Skater’s Paradise

A testament to the DIY spirit of the skateboarding community

Nestled at the terminus of Ninth Street in West Oakland's Lower Bottoms neighborhood, adjacent to the retaining wall of Highway 880, lies Lower Bobs Skatepark—a testament to the DIY spirit of the skateboarding community. Established in 2013 by local skaters, this 7,000-square-foot concrete haven transformed a once-neglected lot, previously littered with debris and needles, into a vibrant hub for skaters of all ages.

The park's construction was a grassroots effort, spearheaded by individuals like Big Hongry, co-owner of Break Free Skate Shop in Downtown Oakland. Armed with bags of concrete and a shared vision, the team repurposed scavenged materials—turning telephone poles into spines and using local debris as fill for ramps. This approach not only showcased their resourcefulness but also fostered a deep sense of community.

Over the years, Lower Bobs has become renowned for its challenging features: smooth, steep walls, expansive ramps, and ever-evolving obstacles, all adorned with vibrant graffiti. Its reputation has attracted skaters from around the globe, especially during events like the annual P-Stone Cup—a DIY skate show that celebrates the park's unique culture.

However, the park's unsanctioned origins have led to challenges. In its early days, city officials, including Joe DeVries, Assistant to Oakland’s City Administrator, expressed concerns about the unauthorized construction. Despite initial warnings and attempts to halt the build, the skaters' determination prevailed. Community support further bolstered their efforts, with local business owners and residents recognizing the positive impact of the skatepark in an area previously plagued by crime and illegal dumping.

In recent developments, a new housing project named "The Phoenix" is set to rise adjacent to Lower Bobs. While concerns about potential displacement have surfaced, builders have assured that the skatepark will remain untouched.

Lower Bobs stands as a symbol of community-driven transformation, turning a once-forgotten space into a beacon of creativity and unity. Our skatepark hunter, William, recently visited to capture its essence for our skate map, ensuring that this iconic spot continues to inspire skaters worldwide.
