Fonte Luminosa is one of Leiria's most iconic natural street-skating spots, located in the historic centre of the city. The large plaza surrounding the ornamental fountain is known for its smooth stone surface, ledges, benches and different-height architectural features, giving skaters plenty of possibilities for creative street lines.
The spot has played an important role in Leiria's skate culture for decades. Local skaters were already using Fonte Luminosa extensively in the 1990s and 2000s, and it eventually became internationally recognised through skate photography and video. The city's skaters describe it as the spot that helped put Leiria on the global skate map.
In fact, the popularity of the spot was one of the reasons Leiria built a dedicated skatepark in 2016. Municipal discussions noted that skaters had been using Fonte Luminosa because of its excellent surface and obstacles, although skating there also caused wear to the historic plaza.
