The UBC Skatepark, located at the University of British Columbia’s Point Grey campus in Vancouver, is one of the most unique facilities in North America. Spanning approximately 10,000 square feet at the corner of Thunderbird Boulevard and Health Sciences Mall, it was the first skatepark in North America to be fully integrated into a university campus. This landmark project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in 2011, serving as a flagship example of how action sports can be harmoniously blended into a sophisticated academic and residential environment.
The design is a "social plaza" that mirrors the high-end architectural aesthetic of the UBC campus. Unlike traditional "fenced-in" skateparks, the UBC facility is an open, porous space that functions as both a high-performance skate spot and a pedestrian-friendly campus plaza. It features a technical street-oriented layout with granite-capped ledges, "slappy" curbs, banks, and a variety of stair sets and rails. A standout feature is the use of high-quality materials, including integral colored concrete and decorative stone accents, which allow the park to blend seamlessly with the surrounding university buildings and landscaping.
Because the park is located in a high-traffic academic zone, the design emphasizes "skate-and-go" flow and acoustic sensitivity. The layout encourages technical, low-impact street skating rather than high-speed transition, making it a perfect fit for the campus's "Living Laboratory" initiative. By removing the social barriers typically associated with skateparks, the UBC Skatepark has become a vibrant community hub where students, faculty, and local youth coexist, proving that skateboarding can be a legitimate and valued component of modern urban and educational planning.
