Located in Jardim Almirante Reis in Funchal's historic Zona Velha, this skatepark has one of the most spectacular settings in Portugal, sitting directly beside the Madeira cable car and just metres from the Atlantic Ocean.
The approximately 900 m² park was built by A|Park (the former Academia dos Patins) in 2016 following requests from Funchal's local skateboarding community. Construction began on 24 June 2016, with an investment of around €100,000 and a three-month construction period. The project was supported by the Municipality of Funchal and partly emerged from proposals submitted by local skaters through the city's participatory-budget process.
The layout combines street and transition elements, including quarters, banks, funboxes, a pyramid, rails, curbs and a step-up. The relatively compact design provides a mixture of lines for skateboarding, BMX, inline skating and scooters.
Since opening, the skatepark has become an important meeting point for Madeira's wheeled-sports community. It has also received creative interventions, including a large mural project developed with students from the University of Madeira.
With the ocean in front, the cable cars passing overhead and Funchal's steep hills rising behind it, the scenery here might be almost as impressive as the skating.
