Appointed by Groundwork South, VelosolutionsUK designed and built a pumppark for bikes and skateboards within a compact 450m² site at their community centre. With skateboarders a specific focus of the client's brief, the design needed to deliver genuine skateable features alongside a quality riding experience.
The solution was a full asphalt pump park — a concept developed by VelosolutionsUK featuring a fully surfaced asphalt area contained within a perimeter pump track route. Skateboard-specific features include a volcano, a concrete ledge with galvanised coping for grinding, and a flat bank. Berms and features were kept low in amplitude throughout, ensuring the space appeals to younger and beginner users across both disciplines. The entire area was surfaced to create a smooth, consistent, and grippy finish, with recycled aggregates used for all sub-base materials and maximum recycled content incorporated into the custom asphalt mix.
The facility was designed and built to BS EN 14974:2019. Drainage was managed through a series of bottle gullies and culverts leading to a soakaway outlet, each fitted with a custom grille with 6mm perforations to accommodate smaller wheels and meet the BSI standard. During design development, close coordination with a separate contractor developing an adjacent zip wire ensured the track did not encroach on their site or safety runoff buffers.
to finish the space, an apple tree was planted adjacent to the track — set at a considered distance from the track edge to protect the root system and ensure no hazard to users. The skatepark opened in June 2020.
