ABOUT SKATEPARK

Driftopia Inn

Tucked away in the rugged mountain wilderness of the Kootenays at 2011 Pass Creek Road, the Driftopia Inn is one of the most unique, privately owned skateboard destinations in North America. Operating as a specialized "SkateBnB," this multi-acre mountain retreat is a dedicated sanctuary for action sports travelers, snowboarders, and skateboarders. What makes this property legendary is its direct connection to the roots of Canadian skateboarding history and its fully private, hybrid DIY concrete skatepark nestled right on the property grounds.

The concrete slab at Driftopia carries a sacred legacy in West Kootenay skate culture. Back in 1999, the property was owned by the family of the late Eugene Voykin. On this exact concrete pad, Voykin and the iconic Canadian skate legend Josh Evin physically constructed a massive 5,000-pound portable wooden skatepark for a historic 3,000-kilometer touring project. When that tour concluded, those original wooden ramps were dropped under an abandoned Vancouver overpass—unwittingly forming the birth and foundation of Vancouver's famous Leeside DIY. Years later, the property was purchased by local skater and artisan woodworker Daniel “Alien” Nelson, who set out to honor his late friends by turning the historic slab into a permanent concrete paradise.

The construction of the private park was fueled by pure community collaboration. While Daniel Nelson was prepping the site, Jamie Maley and the master builders from Transition Construction were executing public projects in the regional area. Hooked by the historical significance of the land, the Transition Construction crew stepped in to help design and physically pour a rugged, DIY barrier-style concrete quarter pipe. Shortly after, a local father-son concrete finishing team stepped up to pour a mirrored copy of the feature, creating a gap-to-stair configuration. Nelson has since continued expanding the site one feature at a time—including adding a highly sought-after concrete mini-bowl protected by a full structural roof to shield riders from the wet Pacific Northwest weather.

The Driftopia Inn Skatepark is a strictly private concrete facility located on the grounds of a commercial guest accommodation. It is not an open public park; access to the indoor bowling lane, private bar, sauna, and covered concrete skate bowl is reserved exclusively for booked guests staying at the lodge, or via direct private permission from the operators. The property is located at 2011 Pass Creek Road in Castlegar, British Columbia.

TrucksandFins Tip: This is the ultimate bucket-list road-trip basecamp if you are touring the legendary skateparks of the Kootenay Boundary area (like nearby Creston, Trail, and Rossland). Because the concrete features a true, rugged DIY finish poured by core skateboard builders, soft-to-medium transition wheels are ideal for gripping the raw concrete geometry. If you are planning a trip, be sure to book your stay well in advance via private rental channels, pack your own skate tools, and respect the strict 10:00 PM outdoor quiet hours out of respect for the surrounding mountain valley community.
