Every skatepark should have a mellow quarterpipe, flat ledge, flat bar and manual pad, so that beginners and experts alike can learn new tricks and progress to bigger obstacles with minimal risk. Transition construction lived up to their name with an impressive transition skatepark here in Rossland, but failed to deliver on these skatepark essentials, leaving younger and beginner skaters in rossland struggling to work their way up, and alienating experienced street skaters with cost-cutting concrete ledges that chunked-out after just a few years, and nearly never get skated, not for lack of demand. These basic obstacles take up the least amount from the budget, so not putting them in a park is silly. The nearest park with a decent flat ledge is in Castlegar, but a quality ledge for learning is as far as Slocan, 100km away from Rossland. There's nothing wrong with a transition-focused skatepark, but all parks should strive for a healthy balance between street and bowl, lest they become a maze of scooter kids and crusty outledges of doom like the Rossland skatepark has. The recent additions to the "street section" of the park, three smaller quarter pipes and a slappy-curb manual pad, have been a breath of fresh air, and many sessions now consist entirely of these obstacles. My friends and I worked so hard to get a park built in Rossland as kids, and while far better than nothing, this park has been a let down from it's inception. I only hope other communities can learn from our mistakes and fight for better design.
