Olympiaplein has stood as a legendary landmark in the Amsterdam skate scene for decades, defined by its massive 3,000 m² concrete floor and a raw, DIY spirit. To secure a sustainable future for this historic space without compromising its authentic street character, Nine Yards teamed up with Pontus Alv (founder of Polar Skate Co.) and the Municipality of Amsterdam for a unique urban activation.
Proving that massive budgets aren't required to make a massive impact, the project focused on a meaningful, community-first upgrade. Pontus Alv donated the custom designs for seven free-standing, premium elements tailored specifically to the site's daily users. Nine Yards took charge of the technical execution, constructing and installing the obstacles to meet strict NEN-EN 14794:2019 safety standards—effectively bridging the gap between raw street culture and public safety compliance.
The curated layout introduces premium skateable architecture, including four custom granite curbs and ledges, a steel flatrail, and a distinct pole jam inspired by Amsterdam’s iconic tree protectors. Acting as a successful test case for collaborative urban policy, the revitalized space was immediately embraced by the community. Backed by industry heavyweights like Nike SB, Ben-G Skateshop, and Pop Trading Company, Olympiaplein continues to thrive as an open, accessible cultural stage for generations of skaters.
