Surf in the Algarve - Praia da Arrifana

The first stop on our mission to surf and skate all the spots in Portugal is Praia da Arrifana in the Algarve. I discovered this spot 21 years ago when I was still living in Belgium. After my holidays in Portugal I flew back to Gent, packed a suitcase and bought a one-way ticket back to Portugal. Best decision ever.

Praia da Arrifana is a beach of the municipality of Aljezur and definitely a bucket list stop on every surfers list. The beach break in the middle is well protected from wind and it consists of shifting peaks with nice little tubes. Nothing epic, waves close fast, but fun. On smaller days it can get really busy.

But the real reason, beside the astonishing scenery, to visit this little village is definitely the world-class right pointbreak at the north end of the beach. If you like a wave that is long, powerful, fast and has barrel sections then this spot is for you. But it's only worth checking it out with bigger swells. "Kangaroo point", another name for this spot, only starts working with 2 meter swell, but it can handle triple overhead. Or you like it big, or you go home. Little tip: becareful of the rocks on the inside.
