The Mount Nelson Skatepark, located within Mount Nelson Athletic Park in Invermere, British Columbia, is a 10,000-square-foot concrete facility that serves as a premier destination for the Columbia Valley. This project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in 2017, replacing an older, limited facility with a modern landscape that mirrors the high-performance standards of the region's outdoor culture.
The design is a high-energy "flow-plaza" hybrid, specifically engineered to provide a diverse mix of transition and street terrain. The centerpiece is a versatile flow bowl with varying depths and rhythmic hips, providing the speed necessary to carve through the park’s long lines. This transition zone feeds into a technical street plaza equipped with granite-capped hubba ledges, a "bump-to-bar" feature, flat rails, and an "A-frame" pyramid. The layout utilizes the site’s natural topography, creating a tiered experience where perimeter quarter pipes and banks act as return walls, allowing for continuous, "infinite" lines.
Constructed with high-strength, smooth-troweled concrete, the facility was built to endure the extreme temperature fluctuations and heavy snowfall of the East Kootenays. The aesthetic design is "mountain-modern," featuring clean lines and integrated landscaping that complements the surrounding alpine scenery. The park is situated in a central athletic hub, benefiting from proximity to the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena and local sports fields, providing a safe and highly visible environment for youth.
The site includes professional-grade lighting for evening sessions, which is essential during the shorter daylight hours of the shoulder seasons. Integrated concrete seating and wide spectator aprons allow families and visitors to watch the action while enjoying the panoramic views of the Purcell and Rocky Mountains. Today, the Mount Nelson Skatepark is celebrated as a major community achievement, recognized for its exceptional build quality and its role as a vibrant social center for the Columbia Valley’s action sports community.
