The Marina Park Skate Plaza, situated along the revitalized waterfront of Thunder Bay, Ontario, is a 22,000-square-foot masterpiece that balances high-performance athletics with deep cultural storytelling. This facility was designed by New Line Skateparks in collaboration with Brook McIlroy and built by New Line Skateparks as part of the award-winning "Prince Arthur’s Landing" waterfront redevelopment. The project was the result of extensive collaboration between the City of Thunder Bay and the local youth community, aiming to create a destination that reflects the unique geography and spirit of Northern Ontario.
The park is thoughtfully divided into three primary zones—the Bowl, the Plaza, and the Entrance—each offering a distinct material palette and riding experience. A defining highlight of the facility is the completely customized, skateable recreation of the "Sleeping Giant," a world-class sculptural element that pays homage to the iconic landform visible across the bay. The Plaza area utilizes authentic local stonework on key ledges and walls, blending the rugged textures of the region with smooth, modern concrete. For transition enthusiasts, the park features an authentic pool-style bowl unit, while the street-inspired sections offer technical rails and banks that cater to various skill levels.
Beyond its technical specifications, the Marina Park Skate Plaza serves as a vibrant social hub, featuring integrated seating and viewing areas designed to encourage casual socializing and passive spectating. The facility is seamlessly woven into the surrounding park trail system, ensuring it remains accessible to pedestrians and cyclists while anchoring the waterfront as a premier urban destination. Today, it stands as one of Canada's most celebrated skate plazas, recognized for its exceptional size, site-specific artistry, and its role in the successful transformation of Thunder Bay's historic harbor.
