ABOUT SKATEPARK

Home Avenue DIY skatepark

Tucked directly underneath an elevated highway overpass on Dayton's west side, the Home Avenue DIY Skatepark is a raw, energetic testament to pure underground skateboard culture. True to the spirit of classic Do-It-Yourself spots, the park began organically without official permission when local riders took over a neglected, unused urban space. Rather than tearing down the rogue structures, the City of Dayton eventually recognized the immense positive impact the space had on local youth, stepping in to officially grant the creators the green light to maintain and permanently expand the footprint. The spot even earned international acclaim when it was featured in the August 2024 issue (Issue 531) of Thrasher Magazine.

The entire design and physical construction of Home Avenue DIY are credited to the Digg City Goon Squad, a relentless collective of local builders, skaters, and community organizers. Unlike commercial parks backed by municipal budgets, every ounce of concrete, piece of rebar, and bag of mortar has been community-funded or paid for directly out of the builders' own pockets. To keep up with material demands, the crew frequently partners with local establishments like the Yellow Cab Tavern to host benefit concerts and art fundraisers. The build is an ongoing, collaborative labor of love, drawing in regional skateboarders, artists, and volunteers who continually modify and expand the terrain.

The layout is highly chaotic, tight, and fast, capturing the quintessential essence of a highway under-bridge DIY. Built on a flat asphalt foundation, the Digg City Goon Squad has methodically sculpted a dense maze of poured concrete obstacles, transitional quarter-pipes, wallrides, and unique street structures. The park features an array of concrete jersey barriers, slappy curbs, speed bumps, custom pockets, and multi-tiered ledge configurations. Adding to its distinct visual character, the entire park operates as a massive living canvas, completely blanketed in vibrant local graffiti murals and mosaic details that reflect Dayton’s industrial, gritty identity.

Home Avenue DIY is a 100% free, public, community-built facility. Because of its rugged DIY nature, steep transition angles, and tight obstacle spacing, the park can be highly intimidating for absolute beginners, serving primarily intermediate and advanced riders. Crucially, because it is located directly underneath a major highway bridge, the park provides complete, built-in structural shelter from both rain and the intense summer sun, making it one of the few all-weather session spots in the region. It operates on a dawn-to-dusk schedule without dedicated sports lighting and is located at 2219 Home Avenue, Dayton, Ohio.

TrucksandFins Tip: This is a core, skater-built DIY spot, so leaving it better than you found it is the golden rule—bring a broom, pack out your trash, and consider dropping a donation or buying a shirt from the @DiggCityGoonSquad crew if you see them working. Because the ground is a mixture of raw asphalt and custom-poured concrete patches, slightly softer transition or cruiser wheels (around 92A–97A) can offer a much more forgiving ride than rock-hard street wheels. There are no on-site public washrooms or running water, so pack your own tools and hydration before rolling up.
