Fort William pumptrack

Commissioned by the Lochaber Wheeled Sports Society — a local community group and registered charity — VelosolutionsUK designed and built the Fort William Bike Park with an ambitious goal: a world-class facility for teaching bike skills, promoting wheeled sports, and providing genuinely inclusive provision for the local community.

The park brings together a 265m pump track, an 85m all-ability track, and an adjacent skate park. The advanced features of the pump track, including a curved jump line, were shaped through consultation with local riders and students from Lochaber High School — ensuring the design reflected the needs and ambitions of the community it was built for.

The all-ability track — a concept pioneered by VelosolutionsUK and developed in consultation with Cycling Scotland and Wheels For All — was designed from the outset to accommodate adaptive bikes. Low-level rollers and gently cambered corners make the track accessible to a wide range of riders, including those on adaptive bikes, tricycles, and wheelchairs, while also serving as a welcoming space for balance bikes, children, and complete beginners taking their first steps in the sport.

Opened on 17 July 2023 during the Cycling World Championships, the park launched at a fitting moment — coinciding with Fort William's hosting of the Downhill Mountain Bike event. Positioned adjacent to Lochaber High School and at the end of the cycleway to Nevis Range, the park connects naturally to local MTB trails and a wider network of off-road routes, making it a central and accessible destination for riders of every level
