Completed in 2023, the vibrant skatepark in the township of Bunschoten-Spakenburg stands as a model of community-driven design and innovative cold-weather construction. Centrally located and highly accessible by public transportation, the facility was commissioned by the municipality to replace an outdated park and restore a modern athletic asset to the heart of the Netherlands.
To ensure the final layout precisely mirrored the needs of its daily users, Nine Yards collaborated directly with local skaters and municipal representatives. The resulting design features a spacious, high-flow layout engineered to prevent overcrowding and ensure a smooth, uninterrupted riding experience even on peak days. The park accommodates a wide variety of wheel disciplines and skill levels, balancing technical street obstacles with sweeping transition lines.
To meet strict municipal timelines, construction was carried out through the demanding winter months. To safeguard the structural integrity of the concrete and prevent frost damage, Nine Yards utilized an advanced prefabrication strategy, preparing as many obstacles as possible off-site. The hand-sculpted concrete pours were then strategically executed on days with optimal weather conditions. As a signature finishing touch, a custom pigment was integrated directly into the concrete floor, providing a serene, modern aesthetic that contrasts sharply with the obstacles for enhanced rider orientation and safety.
