ABOUT SKATEPARK

Wascana skatepark

The Regina Skate Plaza (commonly known as the Wascana Skatepark), located within the scenic Wascana Centre in Regina, Saskatchewan, is a 17,000-square-foot facility that revolutionized the province's action sports landscape. This project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in 2007. It was the first "skate plaza" of its kind in Saskatchewan, moving away from traditional ramp-and-bowl layouts to provide a sophisticated urban landscape that integrates seamlessly with the surrounding parkland.

The design is a masterclass in "technical street" architecture, featuring a massive array of obstacles that mimic a high-end city square. The plaza is anchored by three major "green islands"—landscaped areas with trees and grass that break up the concrete and provide a park-like aesthetic. The terrain includes a diverse collection of granite-capped ledges, "slappy" curbs, numerous stair sets with precision-engineered handrails, and a variety of manual pads. A standout feature is the large "cheese wedge" gap, which has become a signature obstacle for local and visiting professional riders.

Unlike many traditional parks, the Wascana Skate Plaza focuses on "plaza flow," where the obstacles are arranged to allow for long, technical lines rather than high-speed transition carving. The facility utilizes high-quality, integrally colored concrete and authentic granite accents, which not only provide a superior sliding surface but also ensure the park remains aesthetically pleasing for non-skating park visitors. Shortly after its opening, the facility gained national recognition by hosting the 2008 DC Nationals Skateboarding Contest.

The park is situated across from Candy Cane Park and near the Saskatchewan Science Centre, making it a highly accessible destination for families. Its design includes wide concrete aprons for spectators and an integrated public art sculpture titled "Air" by Canadian artists Jen Hamilton and Chris St. Amand. Today, the Regina Skate Plaza remains a premier destination in the Canadian Prairies, celebrated for its high-end finish and its role in legitimizing street skating as a professional athletic pursuit.
