ABOUT SKATEPARK

Wakefield skatepark

Wakefield Skatepark is a large concrete skatepark located in Thornes Park, close to the city's athletics facilities. The park opened in 2009 and was designed and built by Gravity Engineering (Gravity Skateparks). It covers approximately 1,600 m² and was developed with significant input from the local Wakefield Skate community.

The park has a creative, flowing layout that combines street and transition terrain, with banks, ledges, hubbas, quarters, bowls, spines, hips and unusual features such as the distinctive Moon Crater. The varied geometry allows riders to create different lines rather than simply following a conventional back-and-forth layout.

The £400,000 project was supported by the Big Lottery Fund, Wakefield Council and WREN, following several years of campaigning by local riders. Young people were involved throughout the development process, helping shape the final facility.
