The Wakefield Skate Park, located inside Wakefield Park at 8100 Braddock Road (historically noted near VA-620) in Annandale, Virginia, holds a significant place in the Mid-Atlantic skate scene as the first public skatepark developed by the Fairfax County Park Authority. The push for the facility began in May 2000 when local teenagers, spearheaded by a student named Alex Bauer, lobbied county officials for a dedicated legal space to ride. Funded by a 1998 park bond at a cost of roughly $960,000, the original 21,500-square-foot facility officially celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 24, 2004.
The history of the park is defined by its architectural evolution from an all-wood ramp course to a modern, hybrid concrete facility. This layout featured separate "Freestyle" and "Competition" courses, packing the asphalt foundation with classic structures like bank ramps, a 4-foot quarter pipe, pyramids, a double jump-box, euro gaps, and grind boxes. Because the original lumber elements faced severe wear and tear from heavy regional use, the county secured funding from a 2008 bond to execute a major upgrade. The renowned California-based design-build firm Spohn Ranch was brought in to expand the facility, breaking ground in April 2012 and officially opening a 6,220-square-foot integral colored concrete street plaza on September 8, 2012, which added modern stairs, hubba ledges, flatbars, and down-rails.
The park is public and open daily from dawn until 11:00 PM, utilizing overhead sports floodlights for highly popular late-night sessions. In March 2012, the county permanently eliminated its original daily admission fee and on-site supervision, transitioning Wakefield into a completely free, "skate at your own risk" facility.
