Rue de l‘Épargne, 69007 Lyon, France.
The Parc Sergent Blandan Skatepark, located in the 7th arrondissement of Lyon, France, is a 1,300-square-meter (approximately 14,000-square-foot) facility that stands as a centerpiece of one of the city’s largest urban park redevelopments. This project was designed by New Line Skateparks in collaboration with BASE Landscape Architecture and was completed in 2014 by X-move. The park is uniquely situated within a historical military fort, requiring a design that respects the heritage of the surrounding ramparts while providing a cutting-edge recreational space.
The design is celebrated for its "skate-urbanism" approach, where the skateable terrain is not fenced off but instead integrated into the broader park circulation. The layout is primarily street-focused, featuring long, flowing lines of granite-capped ledges, manual pads, and various stair sets that mimic the architectural character of Lyon. A distinctive feature is the "wave" transition wall that follows the natural slope of the site, allowing riders to maintain high speeds as they navigate between the different levels of the plaza.
In addition to its technical street features, the park includes a transition area with quarter pipes and hips that provide a "flow-park" feel. The construction utilized high-quality, light-colored concrete and integrated local stone to match the historical aesthetic of the Fort Blandan site. Since its opening, the Sergent Blandan Skatepark has become a major hub for Lyon’s vibrant skate and BMX scene, praised for its open-concept design and its role in transforming a former military site into a lively, inclusive public space.
