Tucked away in New Westminster's scenic, seventy-five-acre flagship park, Queen’s Park Skatepark—often just called the New West Skatepark—is an absolute masterpiece of modern transition design. Built to replace the legendary old Mercer Skatepark, which was immortalized in classic early-2000s skate videos, this facility brings a heavy dose of Pacific Northwest-style concrete to Metro Vancouver. Rather than copying standard, repetitive modern layouts, Queen’s Park breaks the mold entirely.
It was designed and built by Transitionconstruction, a specialized firm led by Colin Dion. For Queen's Park, Transition Construction collaborated with local skate visionary Jamie Maley, who brought a raw, creative DIY perspective to the layout by drawing concept ideas on napkins. Transition’s veteran engineer, Jay McIntyre, then translated those complex hand-drawn shapes into a buildable reality. The result is a park sculpted by a dedicated crew of local skaters who approached the build like a giant community DIY project, pouring custom features that cannot be found anywhere else.
The crown jewel of the layout is an eight-foot deep end complete with pool-block coping for authentic barking grinds. This deep end feeds into a miniature four-and-six-foot kidney-shaped peanut bowl. Seamlessly connected to the bowls is an organic flow zone featuring two-foot, noping-topped quarterpipes, curved and snaking Derby curbs, unique banks, and extensions. While the park lacks a traditional, heavy street section, it surrounds the central bowl with creative transition-to-street hybrid elements that integrate zones for everyone from beginner carvers to expert bowl riders.
TrucksandFins Tip: Because this park was inspired by rugged Pacific Northwest design, you will find incredibly unique features like the pool-block deep end and unusual coping styles. Bring a set of harder wheels to take full advantage of the buttery-smooth, expertly poured concrete. If you need a break from skating, the surrounding flagship park offers excellent tree-lined pathways, washrooms, and a snack concession open during the warmer months.
