Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Bridgetown, Barbados.
The Kaitif Skatepark, located at the Sir Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Wildey, St. Michael (just outside Bridgetown), Barbados, is a groundbreaking, world-class athletic facility for the Caribbean action sports community. Built to give local youth a legal, professional space to train and to help position the island as an international destination for sports tourism, the facility was funded through a massive 1.4 million Barbadian dollar philanthropic investment by The Maria Holder Memorial Trust. After an extensive planning and development phase, the park celebrated its historic official opening ceremony on Saturday evening, May 11, 2019.
The 13,000-square-foot outdoor concrete facility was designed by Pillar Design Studios, a globally recognized specialty action sports design and architecture firm. Engineered with an exceptionally smooth, high-precision concrete finish, the park seamlessly merges transition elements with a modern street course layout. The design features a versatile flow network comprising multiple quarter pipes, bank ramps, hips, and specialized pocket transitions alongside classic street replicas such as flatbars, stepped ledges, and grind boxes. This world-class infrastructure was specifically designed to accommodate progression for various disciplines, making it a highly utilized space for skateboarders, inline skaters, and BMX riders alike.
Operated and managed by the National Sports Council in tandem with the Skateboard Association of Barbados, the facility runs on a structured weekly schedule, typically opening from Tuesday through Sunday with designated afternoon and weekend hours. The facility is fully equipped with professional overhead sports lighting to facilitate cooler evening sessions away from the intense tropical sun. To maintain a safe environment for community progression and youth clinics, the park strictly enforces safety guidelines, including a mandatory helmet policy for all active participants on the concrete.
