Completed in the summer of 2019, the iconic skatepark in the heart of Hengelo stands as a masterclass in urban integration and infrastructure management. Situated directly within the high-traffic plaza of Hengelo's central train station, this 1,000 m² custom concrete park draws action sports athletes from all across the country. Commissioned by the Municipality of Hengelo and designed by DSGN CONCEPTS, the project required navigating a highly restrictive and complex urban environment.
Building a large-scale skate facility in the middle of a major transit hub presents immense logistical challenges. To execute the project successfully, Nine Yards formed a specialized construction team agreement alongside civil engineering firm Roelofs. The primary focus during this simultaneous execution phase was preserving regional accessibility, ensuring that the heavy daily flow of commuters traveling to work, school, and home remained completely uninterrupted.
Drawing on years of experience with complex public spaces, Nine Yards delivered innovative construction solutions that respected all infrastructural constraints without compromising on the park's design quality. The resulting facility stands as one of the largest and most vibrant skateparks in the region—proving that high-performance street sports architecture can thrive seamlessly alongside major public transit infrastructure.
