The Harty Development Skatepark, located within the town of Fort Fairfield, Maine, is a 6,000-square-foot facility that serves as a vital recreational asset for the rural Aroostook County region. This project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in 2017, replacing a small, outdated setup with a permanent, modern concrete landscape. The project was made possible through the generous support of the Harty family and local community members who recognized the need for a durable, safe, and professional-grade space for the area's youth.
The design is a compact "modern-plaza" hybrid, engineered to maximize a smaller footprint by providing a dense concentration of features. It focuses on technical street terrain and approachable transition elements, making it an ideal environment for skill progression. The park features a versatile mini-ramp and flow section at one end, which transitions into a street plaza equipped with granite-capped hubba ledges, flat rails, and a variety of banks and stair sets. The layout utilizes perimeter quarter pipes as return walls, allowing riders to maintain their speed and create continuous loops through the center of the park.
Constructed using high-strength, smooth-troweled concrete, the facility was specifically engineered to withstand the extreme winter conditions and heavy snowfall typical of Northern Maine. The design emphasizes clean lines and clear sightlines, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter users alike. Situated within a central community park area, the skatepark is surrounded by green space and features integrated concrete seating for spectators and parents. Today, the Harty Development Skatepark is celebrated as a significant community achievement, providing a high-quality "urban" experience in a scenic rural setting.
