The Ed Benedict Skatepark in Portland, Oregon, is a revolutionary 16,000-square-foot facility that redefined the relationship between action sports and environmental sustainability. As the city’s first legitimate street-plaza-based facility, it gained international recognition—including a 2009 profile in the New York Times—for its innovative "green" design. This landmark project was designed by New Line Skateparks in partnership with Stantec and built by California Skateparks. The development was a collaborative triumph involving Portland Parks & Recreation, the Bureau of Environmental Services, and local advocates like the Skaters for Portland Skateparks.
What sets Ed Benedict apart is its "organic" design, which treats the skatepark as a living landscape. The facility features a series of green channels, sand filtration planters, and two major biofiltration islands that provide natural on-site treatment for 100% of the park's stormwater runoff. This functional infrastructure is seamlessly integrated into a technical street plaza that boasts custom sculptural elements, intricate concrete stamp patterns, and a diverse combination of materials developed alongside local Portland artists.
The terrain offers a sophisticated mix of granite-capped ledges, stairs, and banks, interspersed with smooth transition pockets and a unique "skateable art" feel that mirrors the creative spirit of the Pacific Northwest. By proving that high-performance concrete landscapes can be ecologically responsible, the Ed Benedict Skatepark has served as the global blueprint for sustainable "green" skatepark development for over a decade.
