The Dawson Creek Skatepark, located at 10400 4A Street within Barbaree Park in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, is a landmark 10,000-square-foot facility that revolutionized skatepark architecture in Canada. This project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks and completed in the fall of 2004. As one of the earliest true "skate plazas" in the country, it moved away from the industrial "bowl-in-a-field" model toward a sophisticated, park-like environment that integrates seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
The design is a masterclass in "plaza-style" terrain, spread across nearly half an acre of community parkland. The layout prioritizes architectural features that mimic real-world urban environments, including long granite-capped ledges, multi-level manual pads, diverse stair sets, and low-profile "slappy" curbs. A key innovation of the Dawson Creek project was the integration of functional green space directly into the riding area; grass islands and landscaped "islands" break up the concrete, providing natural cooling and aesthetic appeal. This "skateable-park" hybrid proved so successful that it sparked a national trend, influencing the development of similar plaza-style facilities across North America.
The park’s location within Barbaree Park makes it a central social hub, featuring wide pedestrian walkways and integrated seating that encourages spectators and families to engage with the space. The success of the Dawson Creek Plaza is often cited in municipal planning as a case study for how high-quality youth infrastructure can revitalize public parks. By combining technical skate terrain with high-end landscaping, the project transformed a standard recreational space into a celebrated community landmark. Today, the park remains a "must-visit" for riders traveling the Alaska Highway, recognized for its historical significance and its enduring, high-quality build.
