ABOUT SKATEPARK

Beautiful Mountain Skatepark

The Beautiful Mountain Skatepark (locally known as K’éshjéé’zhí), located in the community of Beautiful Mountain (Tse’aanilzhini) on the Navajo Nation in Arizona, is a groundbreaking 6,000-square-foot facility. This project was designed and built by New Line Skateparks in 2018. It was a flagship project of the Sandals Foundation and the Tony Hawk Foundation (now The Skatepark Project), created to provide a high-quality recreational outlet for the Diné youth in one of the most remote regions of the United States.

The design is a compact "modern-flow" plaza that focuses on technical progression and cultural integration. Despite its smaller footprint, the park is packed with features, including a versatile mini-ramp section that feeds into a technical street zone. The plaza is equipped with granite-capped hubba ledges, flat rails, a central "A-frame" pyramid, and bank-to-bank features. The layout is engineered to allow for "circular flow," enabling riders to use the perimeter quarter pipes to maintain momentum and navigate the technical obstacles in a continuous loop.

A defining characteristic of Beautiful Mountain is its deep connection to the local community. During the design phase, the youth were heavily involved in selecting features that would help them transition from beginner to intermediate skill levels. The park's name, K’éshjéé’zhí, translates to "little toe," reflecting the local geography and the intimate, community-scale nature of the space. The aesthetic of the park is purposely minimalist to allow the surrounding desert landscape and the majestic "Beautiful Mountain" itself to serve as the backdrop.

Constructed with high-strength concrete designed to endure the extreme temperature shifts and high winds of the high desert, the park remains a durable sanctuary for local skaters and BMX riders. It is located near the local chapter house and school, making it a safe and accessible central gathering point. Today, the Beautiful Mountain Skatepark is celebrated not just for its technical design, but as a symbol of resilience and the transformative power of action sports in rural and Indigenous communities.
